BUPT Regional Economy and Industry Development Research Center (REIDRC) was established in October 2006 based on the School of Economics and Management. REIDRC invited the well-known economist and founder of international and development economics Professor Zhang Peigang as well as Chen Dongsheng, an economist, Vice-chairman of the China Association for Regional Economics and Honorary member of the Department of Chinese Academy of Social Science as academic consultants. The Honorary Director of the center is Doctor Zhou Hongren, nationally well-known informatization expert and Executive Director of the Advisory Committee for State Informatization. Doctoral supervisor Professor Cha Hongwang is the Director of the center.
REIDRC has been pursuing open development, drawing experts from BUPT and other institutions. The mainstay academic elites include BUPT Professor Sun Qiming, Professor Wu Hong, Professor Du Zhenhua, Professor Chenyan, Professor An Jia, Professor Qi Jiaying and Professor He Yun. Adjunct researchers include Researcher Doctor Li Zuojun from the Development Research Center of the State Council, Doctor Zeng Zhize from the Industrial Economy and Technological Economy Research Institute of National Development and Reform Commission, Researcher Doctor Mei Xinyu from the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation, Doctor Wang Lianhai from the Department of Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Commerce, Doctor Liu Yingkui Deputy-director of the Beijing WTO Affairs, and Doctor Yang Xiaodong President of Beijing Urban-rural Innovation Association. Many young scholars are also active members of the center, including Postdoctoral Fellow Liu Yu, Doctor Pang Jinyu, Doctor Ma Rong, Doctor Zheng Yongbiao, Doctor Peng Zhiwen and many others. The integration of many disciplines and departments is both a special feature and an advantage of the center.
The center has three functions, of nurturing talents, doing academic research and providing decision-making consultation, with the aim to develop an academic platform for BUPT disciplinary development. The center also aims to produce many influential research findings and educate a large number of high-quality masters and doctors.
REIDRC has attached great importance to academic influence since its establishment. It has undertaken altogether 6 cooperative projects with the Development Research Center of the State Council, the National Reform and Development Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Commerce, and the Ministry of Science and Technology. It is currently undertaking 2 projects from the National Social Science Foundation and 1 key project of the Twelfth Five-Year Plan of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. It has extensive academic exchanges with many universities and academic institutions, such as Beijing University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University, Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Northwest University, The Chinese Association of Productivity Science, China Marketing Association, Development Economics Research Center of China, Foreign Economics Research Institute and Beijing Urban-rural Innovation Association. By July 2009, REIDRC had published 1 academic book “A New Approach to Regional Economics and the Development Strategy of China's West”, participated in the publication of 4 academic books, edited 1 textbook, published over 20 papers in many core journals, such as Economics Information and Academic Monthly. At present, the research focus of the center is on the integration of informatization and industrialization, industry cluster and regional economic development.
The major research interests of the team of REIDRC are as follows: informatization development problems in less advanced areas of China, integration of and interaction between informatization and industrialization, industry cluster, regional development strategies, China’s western development etc.
