Professor Tai Chiu Edwin Cheng is the Chair Professor of Management in the Department of Logistics of Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Because of his outstanding achievements in scheduling, he was granted a Doctoral Degree in Science by Cambridge University. Doctor of Science is a senior doctoral degree and the highest academic honor a researcher can ever acquire.
In the past twenty years, Professor Cheng has been doing rigorous studies in scheduling and published a large number of research reports in international journals, enriching the knowledge of scheduling. Among many of his research achievements, sixty-six papers were selected and submitted to the academic committee of the graduate school of Cambridge University. The academic committee spent four years evaluating Professor Cheng’s papers carefully and finally decided to confer the degree as an acknowledgement of his academic contribution.
Cambridge University has much higher requirements for a Doctor of Science than that for Doctor of Philosophy; the Doctor of Science as a senior doctoral degree has a high reputation in Cambridge University, which itself demonstrates the acknowledgement of the outstanding innovative contribution of the holder.
Professor Cheng is an expert in production and operations management, operations research, industrial engineering and many other areas; his research achievements in scheduling have been especially widely praised. Scheduling is the process of deciding how to commit resources between a variety of possible tasks to maximize the benefits and minimize the resources involved. The research findings can be applied in resource allocation decision-making, such as assisting management personnel in designing the sequence of multiple tasks.
Professor Cheng got his Ph. D in operations research from Cambridge University in 1984; in 1992 he won the Outstanding Young Engineer of the Year Award from the Institute of Industrial Engineers; in 2000, he won the Croucher Senior Research Fellowship from Hong Kong Croucher Foundation. Now, he is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of the Province of Manitoba in Canada, a member of the British Computer Society, a senior member of the British Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications, a senior member of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers, a member of the American Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, and a life member of the American Association for Operations Management.
Professor Cheng is the co-author of three books and has published over three hundred papers in professional journals; now he is an editor or member on editorial boards of ten international journals. Besides, he has been granted research funding of over 250 million Hong Kong dollars. In the largest technological and medical research database-Science Direct, Professor Cheng’s publication in logistics are the most frequently searched. He was named one of the “most cited scientists” in All Fields, in Computer Science, and in Engineering by the internationally famous ISI Web of knowledge over a consecutive five-year span. Besides instruction and research, Professor Cheng has also been providing consultancy for government, industrial and business enterprises.
